Impact of Cuts to Medicaid and CHIP on Young Children

According to a report from the Urban Institute, any potential cuts to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will disproportionately impact young children and their families. Nearly half (48.8 percent) of the nation’s 15.7 million children ages 3 and younger relied on Medicaid or CHIP in 2015. These programs have ensured almost universal health care coverage for young children in this country. In fact, the Urban Institute’s paper shows that parents of young children are nearly four times as likely to be uninsured as their young children.
